Jangan takut dikhianati.

this week, and I really only have one that has been consistent every single place I have ever visited: I walk, as much as possible. Not only is this the healthy (and environmentally friendly!) choice, but it is also one that allows me to see the most and experience every place to its fullest, never fail. When I first moved to Seattle, I walked back and forth across my new city for days, weeks, until I knew most of the streets and landmarks by name. Because of this I knew my me city (including cool, secret spots) better than the other students who had been there all summer. When I visited Los Angeles for the first time I walked clear across town, through at least five neighborhoods. People looked at me like I was nuts (truly no one walks in LA), but I really got a great feel for a place that I hope to live in some day. • My all-time favorite walking trip was from my hotel in Siem Reap to Angkor Wat, when I ran out of money in Cambodia. Tuk-tuks were suddenly too expensive and my tennis shoes had had the soles ripped out of them while walking in ancient Bagan in Myanmar, so I was left with only flip flops, but walking allowed me to spend hours chatting with local children, watching them go about their daily lives. If you drive up to Angkor Wat, you will get there quickly, but you'll miss out on seeing the ancient temples get slowly larger on the horizon in front of you; you'll miss out on seeing the local children play in front of one of the most desired backdrops on Earth. (Can you imagine this being your playground?) Local peoples use the surrounding moat for washing clothes and swimming, boys jump into its waters from ropes hanging from trees. I wouldn't have seen any of this had I not been walking. Next time I go I might rent a bicycle, but slow travel will always be my preference. You don't get the full experience until you slow down.

Hustle has become the melody of my days. Never ceasing, just repeating. I think about stopping, about saying no to the revolving cycle, but I don't know how. I've set these expectations on myself to perform, accomplish, achieve--if I stop, I fail. I let myself down, along with the people watching me. So I naively keep pushing, planning, striving, until the me I am becomes unrecognizable. The careless spirit fades, the laughter exists only when appropriate, the dreamer becomes a realist, and the tired heart begins to resent the carefree. Ever experience soul thirst? It destructive. It leaks into every aspect of your being, tearing you away from the "you" you used to know. The thing is though, it doesn't have to be that way. The soul thirst is solvable, and the solution lies in one "no" at a time. Declaring "no" over the constant hustle, the lists, the proving, the expectations. So I tested out the whole saying no thing today. I snuggled in my pjs past noon, finished a book, and started another book. Left my homework undone. Went for a long run and allowed myself to walk (gasp). I sat in the sunshine, and overdosed on vitamin D. I daydreamed over too many love songs, and painted my toes gold. I snuck in ice cream before (& after) dinner, sipped a cocktail and laughed with the ones I love most. I thought about everything, but basically nothing and that was freedom. It's 8pm now and there's work I didn't do, makeup scattered across my bathroom counter and laundry covering my bed, but in this moment I feel the most accomplished I've felt in a long time. In the failure of my to-do's I found a glimpse of the me I used to be. I'm not there yet, and tomorrow I'll etch away once again at my list, but tonight my soul is still. I'm closer today than I was yesterday to that goofy, lighthearted, rambunctious girl I almost forgot.
Cash me outside, how bout that?
